Sleepy Hollow S1E6 The Sin Eater

Ok, so I had a bad week and flaked on writing and then this show went on haitus and then I realized I hadn’t posted my AHS: Coven stuff either so uggh. But then this is brand new so I don't think it was noticed. Yay? Anyway, on with it! Spoilers after the cut.

Sleepy Hollow doesn’t really make me have deep thinky thoughts and really, that’s ok. Sometimes, its nice to just sit down with a giant bowl of popcorn and enjoy super spoopy creppy ride. This week was a pretty great ride. A sort of twist on the monster of the week. We had one bad monster who inflicted sin upon people and one good “monster” who took it away. I loved their take on The Sin Eater and honestly can’t remember another horror/supernatural show that has used this mythology previously. (Correct me if I’m wrong. I have a feeling The X-Files may have.) It’s a super cool piece of mythology and John Noble is always wonderful. I hope he gets to come back!

And, just when I thought my hearts for eyes for SH guest stars could not get any bigger, Craig Parker aka Darken Rahl aka Claudius Glaber aka that elf from LOTR showed up! I may have actually squeed out loud and clapped. He played, of course, a bad guy. He’s so smarmy and menacing and perfect when he’s bad though.

Most of my notes during the episode are punctuated with lots of exclamation points and if I could have, I would’ve drawn little hearts and maybe thrown some glitter on them because Abby Mills and Ichabod Crane are the bestest BFFs ever to BFF and it is adorable. I love it. And I’m working really hard not to ship it because Crane came with a wife and because I love male/female platonic relationships portrayed on tv and film with no sex or romance stuff forced into it. Its awesome. Plus, it’s a white guy and a woman of color which is a pairing (friendship or romance) that we haven’t seen too much of on tv. And when we do see it, generally there’s a level of comedy to it, as in “look at how hilarious this is because these two types of people would normally never interact!” (I am aware of Scandal but I don’t know enough about it to comment on it. I do feel like that would be another exception to the rule though.)

(In that vein only two new shows this fall have passed any kind diversity test (for me at least) and they are Sleepy Hollow, District Nine Nine and, AHS: Coven. Every other show just makes me sing the theme song to Pretty White Kids with Problems.)

As far as plot goes, I wasn’t completely sold on Ichabod’s suicide to save everyone choice. I did buy his guilt over taking too long to choose the right path. Anyone who has made a mistake and turned around from it feels that shame. Maybe his choice wasn’t really out of character for him. Maybe he feels guilty and out of place and helpless to stop what is coming, but I hadn’t really gotten that from the character in previous episodes. It is definitely something I’d like to explore as we’ve explored Abby’s guilt over her own late turn around.   I also didn’t buy that Abby would allow him to do it. I do buy that she wouldn’t let him do it alone and that she would be there with him all the way through it. But, again, this isn’t a show that I need to get super angsty with. The characters have problems but they don’t wallow in them and they don’t need to.

I also really loved Abby and Jenny working the missing Ichabod case together. I want to see their relationship mending and growing and them becoming an awesome team with Ichabod. And I desperately need their world to cross over with Sam and Dean Winchester. Like, really desperately. I’m assuming fan fic will make this happen for me, but probably in a super porny way and I just need them to meet up and work a case and be awesome together is all. (Fan fic make this happen. And make Sam and Jenny best friends. Sam needs friends. And please have Ichabod and Dean not understand technology together. You have your prompt, make it so.)

On the even more serious business side of things, the apocalypse is a big deal, but I think maybe, just maybe, if there’s time to hang out at a baseball game, there’s time to swing by a Gap or Target or something and grab Crane some new pants. His outfit has got to be RIPE.
